| Using Yahoo Pipes For Extracting Accounting Job Descriptions From RSS Feeds of Classified Ads June 29, 2007 I. Introduction. This article presents information on a Yahoo Pipes product designed to pull from RSS feeds of accounting and finance job postings, those postings containing the user’s keyword search terms. II. Details. Using Yahoo Pipes technology, RSS feeds containing accounting and finance job postings are being pulled from 14 websites. As these job postings come down the Yahoo Pipe, the postings having terms that match the user’s imputed terms are “snatched” from the Pipe, and show up on the computer screen as the “search result”. The 14 websites from which these RSS feeds are being pulled are: Chicago Tribune, for jobs within a 30-mile radius of downtown Chicago http://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/jobs/chi-jobs-rss,0,3214809.htmlstory Los Angeles Times, for jobs within a 15-mile radius of downtown Los Angeles http://www.latimes.com/classified/jobs/ Los Angeles Times, for jobs within a 15-mile radius of downtown Orange County http://www.latimes.com/classified/jobs/ New York Post http://nypost.careers.adicio.com/careers/jobbrowse/subcategory/cat/Accounting Craigslist – San Francisco http://www.craigslist.org/sfc/acc/ Craigslist – Boston http://boston.craigslist.org/acc/ Craigslist – Washington D.C. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/acc/ Craigslist – Miami http://miami.craigslist.org/acc/ Craigslist – Dallas http://dallas.craigslist.org/acc/ Craigslist – Minneapolis http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/acc/ Craigslist - Phoenix http://phoenix.craigslist.org/acc/index600.html Craigslist – Seattle http://seattle.craigslist.org/acc/ Indeed.com http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=accounting&l= The New Jersey Job Market http://www.njjobmarket.com/ Click here (recommend right click to open in new window) to pull up this Yahoo Pipes product and to use it to “snatch” job postings from the Pipe containing the 14 RSS feeds. For example, type in and run “accounts receivable”, and those postings in the RSS feeds that run past the entry point, and contain the term "accounts receivable", will be delivered to the computer screen. III. Purpose of This Yahoo Pipes Product. This Yahoo Pipes product was developed to assist accounting managers, accounting and human resource departments, and companies. With the use of this product, these groups hopefully will have quick and current access to job descriptions, compensation and benefits being offered, and other information that could be useful to these groups in making decisions related to filling accounting positions within their organizations. Unique (and hopefully useful) characteristics of this Yahoo Pipes product include: 1. New job postings are continually being added to the 14 websites, and old ones removed. Therefore, the RSS feeds with these job postings are continually being updated. This provides timely information on accounting and finance jobs. 2. The postings are originating from websites that are in several major metropolitan areas, on the east and west coasts, and in mid-America. 3. Feeds from several sources are being combined so that much more information is being filtered to snatch the content related to the users needs. 4. The Yahoo Pipe product can be quickly modified to meet specified needs. The Yahoo Pipes product described above is currently being used on the Management Accounting Information Center (MAIC)’s content page: Employment – Job Descriptions. You can go to this page by clicking “Links, RSS Feeds, and Ads” on the MAIC’s homepage. Then, click “Employment – job descriptions”, under “Other Functions for Accounting Departments” and then under “Employee Policies, Benefits, and Payroll Information”.
