Using Yahoo Pipes to Filter Podcast Feeds

To Find Podcasts on Specific Topics
                                                                                                    (December 27, 2008)

Approximately 100 of the Management Accounting Information Center (MAIC)'s 180 content pages now have podcasts to listen to.  .

The purpose of sending these podcast links to a content page is to increase the content page’s usefulness as a source of information for the content page’s topic.  For example, the “Federal Business and Company Tax Information” content page (
http://www.informationforaccountants.com/Taxes_Federal.html) has four podcasts (as of the date of this article – 12/27/2008) that deal with some aspect of business taxes.

Clicking on the podcast’s title should lead to hearing the podcast.  (This assumes you have an audio player on your computer, such as Microsoft’s Media Player.)  (I have found that different podcast originators use different means of delivering the podcast.  In some cases, a file downloads to my computer before the audio begins.  In other cases, no file seems to download before the audio begins.   For some originators, using Apple’s iTunes system is required.)

An Internet search was conducted to find relevant podcast RSS feeds.  (Updated podcast information, e.g., newly created podcasts, are sent from a website, as a continuous stream, using RSS technology.)  Approximately 70 podcast feeds were identified that send out podcast content believe to be relevant to areas of potential interest to management accountants and other business decision makers.

Then, Yahoo Pipes technology filtered these approximately 70 feeds on selected topics (MAIC content page topics).  The filtered results were converted to RSS feeds and added to approximately 100 MAIC content pages.

An example of a Yahoo Pipes result providing podcasts having something to do with payments, and appearing on the MAIC content page “Accounts Payable – Processes, Procedures, and Policies”, is here:

Many other MAIC content pages also have available podcasts having something to do with the content page’s topic.

Three content pages:

http://www.informationforaccountants.com/Management_Information.html

http://www.informationforaccountants.com/Accounting_Information.html

http://www.informationforaccountants.com/Business_Information.html

provide the ability to search the stream from the approximately 70 RSS podcast feeds on a topic that you choose.

This is what you find at these pages to search the approximately 70 podcast feeds for podcasts on a topic you choose:

Hopefully, adding podcasts that are relevant to the content pages’ topics will make the content pages even more useful as a source of links to information of interest to management accountants and to other business decisions makers.
