| Using a Yahoo Pipes Product to Find Company Headline News By Richard Torian June 10, 2008 Yahoo Pipes is a system that can be used to “mash-up”, or combine, RSS feeds from several sources so that the feeds travel down one “pipe”. With these feeds traveling down this pipe, one is able to filter for information that might be contained in the feeds. This can be a great tool for selectively “picking” from much information in the feeds coming down the pipe, the information in the feeds that is relevant to one’s needs. The Yahoo Pipes website provides the location where feeds from various sources can be mashed together (fed down one pipe). Then, using additional technology provided by Yahoo Pipes, the information in the feeds can be filtered by inputting the keywords representing the information wanting to be filtered out of the flowing feeds. The above is a very brief overview, hopefully in rather simple, non-technical terminology, of a basic application that can be made of Yahoo Pipes. This article presents an actual Yahoo Pipes creation (Yahoo Pipes Product) to demonstrate the above. The RSS feeds being used are feeds that come from Yahoo Finance, Google Finance, and MSN MoneyCentral. Once the feeds from these three sources are “diverted” down a single pipe, using Yahoo Pipes technology, then “searching” this pipe, using the stock symbol for a company, as the “keyword”, will “pull out”, and deliver to you, articles, news, data, etc. being generated by Yahoo Finance, Google Finance, and MSN MoneyCentral, and containing the stock symbol. The success of the output depends upon using the correct stock symbol for the company. This Yahoo Pipes product is a simple tool to use to generate a lot of information about a company, very efficiently and effectively. To me, this product represents a new, powerful way of doing search and finding information. The product was generated by another Yahoo Pipes user. I did not generate this product. But, I am allowed to use the product. Stock symbols are very specific to a targeted object of information. Generally, when stock symbols are associated with a targeted object of information, a certain “quality” and “expectation” of the content in that information is likely. So, the “quality” of the search output is greatly increased, without a great deal of effort on the input (other than creating the Yahoo Pipes product being used). This is likely to be a direction of search development (increase quality output, with less input work), as the benefits are great in terms of value added by the process. Click here to see this Yahoo Pipes product in action. Enter the stock symbol in the box next to "Enter the Ticket Symbol” and then click “Run Pipe”. This will lead you to recent news about the company represented by the stock symbol. The Yahoo Pipes product described above is currently being used on the Management Accounting Information Center (MAIC)’s content page: Company Financial Information – United States. You can go to this page by clicking “Links, RSS Feeds, and Ads” on the MAIC’s homepage. Then, click “Financial performance (United States companies)”, under “Companies and Industry Sectors” and then under “Company Financial Results and Other Company Data”. |
