My Qualifications                                                previous page

Hello, I am Richard Torian, the creator and manager of the
Management Accounting Information Center Internet website.  I want to, on this page, introduce you, the user of this site, to me so that this site might be more meaningful to you.

The accounting profession is a second career pursuit for me.  I spent about 25 years working in other, non-accounting, areas before I came to accounting.

Beginning in 1994, after retiring at a relatively young age from the Defense Department, I spent two years getting an MBA from Hood College in Frederick, Maryland.  During my MBA program, I took two management accounting courses, and quickly became a disciple of the importance and contribution that management accounting can make to an organization’s good decision making and the success of the organization.

These management accounting courses introduced me to the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) and IMA's Certified Management Accountant (CMA) certification program.  I passed the CMA exam in 1996, and got certified after working as an accountant for a home construction company.  I have also worked, as an accountant, for an agri-services company in Maryland.  In 1998, I passed the CPA (certified public accountant) exam in Maryland, and, in 2002, I passed IMA's CFM (certified in financial management) exam.

I am now working to develop the
Management Accounting Information Center website and developing an information search and analysis business.

I am certain that my 21-year Defense Department career as a technical intelligence (information) analyst contributed a lot to my coming up with the idea of this website, and, also to skills that I have, to rely on, to try to make this website a premier information source for management accountants.  This 21-year career gave me a mind set that focuses on seeking out the needed information efficiently and effectively, from a variety of sources.  This is the goal of my website and my information service business.

As an undergraduate, I was a chemistry major, and then, after graduation, worked as a chemical laboratory technician for a few years before I went to work for the Defense Department.

I lived in Frederick, Maryland.
